Lawrence Kramer (b. 1946) is an American musicologist and composer, professor at Fordham University (New York), and a prominent figure in the New Musicology movement, which aims to expand the study of music through interdisciplinary research into the reality of sound in all its diverse aspects and human interaction with it. His book, The Hum of the World, published in English in 2019, summarizes Kramer's research in this direction, consolidating the expansion of the field of sound studies with a new concept—the auditory—that encompasses far more than just sound, music, and the audible, and illustrating its relevance with numerous examples from classical and contemporary music, literature, philosophy, and other fields of culture.
