Leningrad is liberated, Shurka and Bobka have returned from evacuation, Uncle Yasha and the mute girl Sara have returned from the front. It seems possible to live again: go to school, work, rebuild the family and the city—but it's not working. It's as if something fundamental has broken—both in the city and in the people: Uncle Yasha has suddenly become like other adults, Sara has retreated into her muteness, and poor Bobka is constantly laughing—with or without reason... Shurka understands that he must bring Tanya back at all costs, even with the help of the Toy King—but what price is he willing to pay for it?

The second book in the series, 'The Stolen City,' was longlisted for the V. Krapivin Prize in 2017. And the third book, 'Beetles Don't Cry,' was longlisted for the NOS Prize.
