Literary agent Roger Damon's apartment is constantly ringing—a mysterious blackmailer named Zalovsky is calling, threatening Damon with death. Who is this blackmailer? Why does he want to kill him? It would seem that Damon is an ordinary man, who has done nothing wrong in his life. People like him don't get threatening phone calls. Damon plunges into memories, going over all the events of his life in his head—and realizes that the list of people he has crossed and hurt is quite long.
