Garrard Conley was nineteen when he underwent conversion therapy at his parents' insistence. The son of a Baptist minister from rural Arkansas known for his conservative views, Garrard had to endure a difficult journey to overcome the aftereffects of the treatment. In 2018, his memoir was adapted into the feature film Boy Erased, starring Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Lucas Hedges.
