Swansea, Wales. Oliver Tate is fifteen. He's a self-proclaimed anthropologist, a pretentious philologist, and just plain spy. Of course, it's in his best interests to know about his parents' mental illnesses in advance, lose his virginity before sixteen, and prove he's cool. But spying on his parents leads him to conclude that his mother is secretly having affairs with some hippie (not his father), and his flamboyant and improbable love for Jordana forces him to keep a diary (which is uncool). No, judge for yourself, here's a quote from his diary: 'I ruffle my hair, rub my eyes. I want passersby to know I'm unhappy.' Yeah. But we'll forgive Oliver Tate everything because he's proven his hegemonic status in society—a wonderful film was made about him in 2010, and Alex Turner himself wrote the music.
