Unlike his namesake king, Darius is not the Great. He is half Persian, but has lived his entire life in Portland. At an early age, Darius was diagnosed with clinical depression, and despite treatment, he still has trouble finding common ground with his peers. After learning that his grandfather is seriously ill, Darius and his family travel to Iran for the first time. There, he meets a neighbor boy, Suhrab, whose friendship changes his life forever.
