In the second half of the 20th century, the last three dictatorships in Western Europe came to an end—the regimes of Franco in Spain, Salazar in Portugal, and the 'Black Colonels' in Greece. Their citizens ultimately chose democratic over authoritarian regimes. In his book, political researcher and journalist Alexander Baunov recounts how the dictatorships in these three countries attempted to prolong their existence and ultimately ended, the differences and similarities of this transition as a result of peaceful transformation in Spain, revolutionary events in Portugal, and military adventure in Greece, and the people who, thanks to or in spite of, this transition took place.
