This book is dedicated to the artistic appearance of the Moscow Metro and is an art historical study examining the architecture and monumental art of metro stations in the context of Russia's socio-historical development. The Moscow Metro held a significant place in the mythological picture of Soviet art. L.M. Kaganovich's words, spoken from the government rostrum in 1935 at the ceremonial meeting in honor of the metro's launch: 'Every station is a palace, every palace is decorated in a special way.' These words became defining both the ideological direction of the metro's construction and the creative thought of the architects. Nevertheless, the aesthetic images of the stations were formed in the context of the architects' independent spatial and stylistic explorations. The central theme of the book is the historical evolution of the volumetric-spatial and figurative-plastic concepts of Russian metro construction and the formation of its unique traditions. Held in 2016 at the Surikov Museum of Architecture, The exhibition 'The Moscow Metro – An Underground Architectural Monument' at the A.V. Shchusev Moscow State University of Architecture provided a fresh perspective on the aesthetics of metro construction. The publication includes documents and memoirs from those who built the first stages of the metro (some of which were recorded by the author back in the 1980s), illustrated with color photographs and archival materials.
