'Opera Reinvented' is a translation from the French biography of opera producer, intendant of the Madrid and Paris opera houses, and director of the Salzburg Festival, Gérard Mortier, without whom the image of modern musical theater is unimaginable.
Mortier began his career in the early eighties. He created such productions as Mozart's Cosi fan tutte directed by Michael Haneke, Olivier Messiaen's Saint Francis of Assisi directed by Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, and Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, directed by Peter Sellers with video by Bill Viola at the Opéra Bastille—'a classic in the Paris Opera repertoire,' according to Beaux Arts Magazine.
His work was interrupted by his death in 2014, but this biography was written in 2006, when the protagonist was still alive, and the text is full of his direct speech. The story of his courage in the face of sudden illness and death resonates in the memoirs of friends and colleagues: director Robert Wilson, gallery owner Tadeusz Ropac, conductor Sylvain Cambrelin, and artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. You will find interviews with them in the second part of the book.
'Opera Reinvented' is addressed to anyone interested in contemporary art, contemporary musical theater, and the costs of creating revolutionary cultural projects.
