Eisenstein on Paper: Graphic Works by the Master of Film (Eyzenshtein na Bumage)
58.49£
The book 'Eisenstein on Paper' is a significant milestone—it presents for the first time 500 of the great master of cinema's finest graphic works, held in his personal collection at the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI). Some works are being published for the first time. In addition to drawings, the album reproduces stills from Eisenstein's films (scanned from film). The publication traces the extraordinary turns of Eisenstein's life and career through the styles of his graphic works. Despite their diversity, they nonetheless form links in a single creative evolution: from early childhood drawings to costume and set designs, from absurd psychoanalytic sketches to late abstractions. A leading scholar of Eisenstein's life and work, the author and compiler of this monographic album, Naum Kleiman, offers a new insight into the motives and objectives of the director's graphic works, quoting and commenting on excerpts from the master's own reflections and analyses, some of which are also published for the first time. The publication opens with an introduction by legendary modern director Martin Scorsese. An introductory article on the history of Sergei Eisenstein's archive and the vast collection of his graphic works was prepared by Tatyana Goryaeva, director of the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI). A biographical article was written by British film historian Ian Christie.
