'The Mysteries of the Fly Agaric' is a scholarly study of the role of the red fly agaric mushroom in the mythology and ritual practices of shamans in Siberia and the Far North. Previously, this topic had received insufficient attention from specialists, and now this gap has been filled. The author collected material for the book over many years and includes virtually all known folklore and ethnographic data on this subject, as well as his own fieldwork. Creation myths are examined in detail, with the fly agaric mushroom being one of the first to be created to protect the earth from evil spirits. Legends of fly agaric maidens—forest beauties who lure travelers to their land—are examined. Numerous stories are presented of shamans' journeys into the otherworldly realms of hidden areas of consciousness. The stages of mushroom intoxication are also analyzed and methods of its use in folk medicine are described.
