Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp was a prominent Russian philologist and folklorist, the founder of the comparative typological method in folklore studies, and one of the founders of modern text theory. Propp's works are recognized as classics of philological scholarship. This book collects his works on the fairy tale genre: 'The Morphology of the Fairy Tale,' 'The Historical Roots of the Fairy Tale,' and 'The Russian Fairy Tale.' The first of these, a monograph, 'The Morphology of the Fairy Tale,' published in 1928, examines in detail the structure of fairy tales. Using tales from A. N. Afanasyev's collection 'Folk Russian Tales,' it examines the functions of characters and their sequence, as well as the ways in which these roles are played, and the motivations and attributes of the characters. The second work, 'The Historical Roots of the Fairy Tale,' first published in 1946, is devoted to the sources of the fairy tale. Here, the author demonstrates how archetypes, various attitudes, and meanings are realized in the text and structure of the tale. Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp's final monograph, 'The Russian Fairy Tale,' first published posthumously in 1984, summarizes the theses presented in the two previous works and also provides detailed information on the history of fairy tale studies in Europe and Russia, the famous storytellers who expounded on the established narratives, and the varieties of the fairy tale genre.
