'Words' (1964) is an autobiographical novel by Jean-Paul Sartre. The author openly recounts his childhood, family and friends, his first encounter with books, and his gradual realization of his calling to become a writer: 'I had found my religion: books began to seem more important to me than anything else.'
Sartre writes wittily and sarcastically about France in the second quarter of the 20th century, the writers and books fashionable at the time, but he is no less critical of himself, revealing to the reader his own childhood fantasies and delusions, which later impacted his adult life.
