In 'A Writer's Diary,' unparalleled in Russian or foreign journalism, Dostoevsky communicates directly with readers, seemingly inviting them to join him in a discussion of the profound themes that permeate his entire work: man and God, good and evil, freedom and Russia's fate. In his 1876 notes, he devotes particular attention to an analysis of the world politics of the time and the spiritual ills of Russian society, which proved to be largely prophetic. The result of his reflections can be seen in the novella 'The Gentle One,' first published in the November issue. In it, the writer explores the relationship between tyrant and victim through the example of an ordinary family.
