'Journey Journal from Tosa to the Capital' was the first work in the nikki genre. It was written by a man—the poet Ki no Tsurayuki—but from the perspective of a woman. In the 'Journey Journal,' he described the hardships of the journey and what he saw along the way. 'Lonely Moon in Sarasina,' whose author is known exclusively as the daughter of Sugawara no Takasue, covers nearly four decades of her life: her marriage and the birth of her children, court service and pilgrimage, the death of her husband, and the loneliness that followed. 'Journal of the Flying Web,' one of the four most important works of the Heian period, tells the story of the complex relationship between the heroine and the father of her child.
