One of the most enigmatic books by the Strugatsky brothers, the genre and purpose of which are determined by each reader in their own way. A philosophical parable? A dystopia? A coming-of-age novel?
The protagonist, Andrei Voronin, finds himself in a City where everyone has the right to a variety of work. He tries himself in various professions and finds himself in difficult, sometimes contradictory, life situations. What is the purpose of the mysterious City Experiment, which pits people from different time periods against each other?
Or is this a case where asking the right question is much more important than the answer?
