Dostoevsky's 'A Writer's Diary' is a miniature 'encyclopedia of Russian life.' He published both fiction—short stories, essays, and memoirs—and journalism—articles, notes, reviews, literary criticism, reviews, and feuilletons on contemporary social, political, and literary events—writing about everything that struck him and interested him personally. In his 1877 notes, Dostoevsky discusses the state of Russian satire, characterizes Nekrasov (both as a poet and a person), discusses 'Anna Karenina,' and much more. The 1877 'Diary' also first published the science fiction story 'The Dream of a Ridiculous Man.' The 'Diaries' were extremely popular among readers, who sent the author hundreds of letters each month, praising him for his 'sincerity and honesty of thought.' Even during the writer’s lifetime, all the issues of the Diary for 1877 were collected and published in a separate edition.
