Walter Benjamin, exceptionally sensitive to all aspects of the modern world around him, wrote numerous works on literary figures of the first half of the 20th century. His works on Franz Kafka occupy a prominent place among them. Several articles on Kafka never fully developed into the book Benjamin envisioned, but they themselves are valuable documents of the early reception of the Prague writer's novels, short stories, and parables. Benjamin, his younger contemporary, found a highly insightful reader whose complex life and capricious thought are not without echoes of Kafka's characters' modus vivendi. This edition presents in Russian translation all of Benjamin's completed works on Kafka, as well as related notes and letters, which allow us to judge the development of the idea for the unrealized book in his youth in the 1920s and 1930s and the polemics of the German thinker with other interpreters of Kafka's prose - Gershom Scholem, Werner Kraft, Theodor Adorno and Bertolt Brecht.
