Ernst Jünger's (1895-1998) essay 'Retreat to the Forest' is a manifesto dedicated to the attempt to protect freedom from political oppression. Jünger explores the very possibility of resistance: how an independent thinker can resist the power of an omnipresent state. No matter how extensive surveillance technologies become, the forest protects the rebel, who, in turn, is capable of striking back at tyranny.
