'An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations' is the work that brought worldwide fame to the Scottish scholar Adam Smith (1723–1790) and laid the foundations of classical political economy.
At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, this work generated enormous interest in the new economic science, which studied both the role of the state and the free market mechanisms involved in the self-regulation of society and determined its material well-being.
