Thirty-six-year-old Ida is married, has long lived in Rome, and works in radio. Ida's mother, who has remained in Messina all these years, wants to sell their old house. She asks her daughter to come and decide what to keep and what to throw away. Finding herself in her hometown, Ida feels with renewed force the pain of the loss she suffered many years ago, when one morning her father left home and never returned.
The sinister reticence between mother and daughter, a strange friendship that brings only emptiness, a sense of rootlessness, complications in her relationship with her husband — the feelings become more vivid and painful in the house of her childhood, where after her father's disappearance she grew up a spineless creature living in constant fear. She realizes that the time has come to deal with the ghosts besieging her soul and find a way out of this vicious circle.
