George Orwell (real name Eric Arthur Blair) was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic. '1984' is undoubtedly the world's most famous dystopian novel, first published in 1949. The book tells the story of Winston Smith, a low-ranking Party member disillusioned with everyday life and the omnipresent eyes of the Party and its sinister leader, Big Brother. Big Brother controls all aspects of life: he introduced a simplified Newspeak, seeking to completely stifle even the possibility of resistance to the system; he criminalized thoughtcrime so that people would not even dare to think about rebellion.
