Victor Hugo's epic novel Les Misérables (1862) is the result of twenty years of the writer's work, a vast canvas without which it is impossible to imagine the spiritual history of the 19th century. This work, particularly well received and took root in Russian soil, as its idea of 'the restoration of a lost man, crushed unjustly by the oppression of circumstances, the stagnation of centuries, and social prejudices' (Fyodor Dostoevsky) has found and continues to find a warm response in the hearts of Russian readers. The names of the novel's heroes - Jean Valjean, Cosette, Gavroche - have long become household words, and the enticing combination of grotesque and romanticism, sentimentalism and realism, together with a tense, gripping plot on the eternal theme of 'the struggle between good and evil,' have led to its frequent use in world cinema.
