Alice gradually grew bored of sitting by the riverbank doing nothing. Once or twice she glanced at the book her sister was reading, but there were no pictures or conversations. 'What's the use of a book if there aren't any pictures or conversations,' thought Alice. She sat there, wondering whether she should get up and pick some daisies to make a wreath, when suddenly… the Rabbit appeared before her and offered to show her the first, richly illustrated edition. When Alice accepted the invitation, could she have imagined the misadventures and encounters that awaited her in the underground house?
Austrian artist Nicholas Mahler not only brings together the characters of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Hans Hartmann's Frankenstein in Sussex, Voltaire's Candide, and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, but also weaves philosophical works by European thinkers of the last century into the plot. The result is hilarious, absurd, and a little tragic.
