One day in Algeria, a cat ate a parrot that was bothering his beloved owner, gained the gift of speech, and wanted to have a bar mitzvah—thus begins a philosophical, witty, and incredibly funny comic book series that has captivated millions of readers around the world.

'The Rabbi's Cat' is both a fairy tale for adults, raising issues of xenophobia, racism, and the contradictions of Jewish traditions, a story about the peoples who lived in Algeria, and a fable with animal heroes. In 2011, Joann Sfar made a cartoon based on the comics about the charismatic talking cat, which won a César Award.

The book includes five stories about the rabbi's cat: 'Bar Mitzvah,' 'The Lion King Malka,' 'Exodus,' 'Paradise on Earth,' and 'African Jerusalem.'

Sfar was born on August 28, 1971, in Nice to a Jewish family (half Sephardic, half Ashkenazi), where he was raised from childhood on fairy tales, myths, and legends. As soon as he learned to hold a pencil, he began drawing. From the age of 15, he started sending his comics to publishers every month, but they rejected his work just as regularly. Around the same time, he discovered his “heroes”: Fred, Baudoin, and Pierre Dubois (a variation on the Little Musketeer theme). “They put sensible ideas into my head.…
