Olga Fedorovna Berggolts was a legendary Leningrad poetess who served as the 'voice of the city' for nearly the entire 900 days of the siege. Remaining in besieged Leningrad, she addressed her fellow citizens over the radio, calling on them to courage and fortitude. She was called the 'Leningrad Madonna' and revered, in the words of Daniil Granin, 'as one reveres the blessed and the saints.'
