'...All poets are friends of dreamy love,' says the author of 'Eugene Onegin.' Love lyrics occupy a significant place in the work of Alexander Pushkin. The first of Pushkin's poems known to us was addressed to the serf actress Natalia: Lyceum students saw her perform at Count V.V. Tolstoy's private theater in Tsarskoye Selo. In a playful tone, the young rake confessed: 'And so it happened to me, What kind of bird is Cupid?' As he matured, Pushkin didn't exactly abandon this lightness and frivolity of love letters—but the nuances and expressions of love in his later poems prove richer and more varied. This edition is structured as a kind of 'lyrical diary' of the poet—recording victories and defeats, the constant swings from lofty love passion to humor, and sometimes even obscenity. Before us stands Pushkin in love. Vorontsova, Kern, Olenina, Ushakova, Goncharova... “As a poet, he considered it his duty to be in love with all the pretty women and young girls he met...” recalled M.N. Volkonskaya, also an addressee of Pushkin’s lyrics, and added: “In essence, he adored only his muse and poeticized everything he saw.”
