The anthology, prepared by the renowned orientalist and translator of Japanese poetry Alexander Dolin, includes classic works by famous poets of the 17th to early 19th centuries, such as Matsuo Basho, Yosano Buson, Kobayashi Issa, Ihara Saikaku, Kamo Mabuchi, Ozawa Roan, Ryokan, Okuma Kotomichi, Rai Sanyo and many others, whose poems have entered the golden fund of Japanese and world literature, as well as colorful examples of humorous poetry and folklore of the 'merry quarters'. The book recreates the historical panorama of Japanese poetry of the Edo period in all its genre and stylistic diversity and introduces the reader to new names previously unknown in our country.
