Susan Juby was born in 1969 in the Canadian town of Smithers, where she lived until the age of twenty. She then moved to Toronto. For some time she worked in fashion design while simultaneously receiving the relevant education, and also worked as a waitress and as a sales clerk in a music store. She later changed fields and began studying English literature—first at the University of Toronto and later at the University of British Columbia.
